As the saying goes “Defense Wins Championships”. For instance, the Seattle Seahawks made the Super Bowl in 2014 and 2015 because of their stout defense. Super Bowl LV was no different as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers crushed the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9. Certainly, the Bucs defense made outstanding plays all over the field and that why’s Tampa took home their second Super Bowl in franchise history. To sum up, here’s how Tampa Bay came out on top Sunday.
Buccaneers LB Devin White
I love the second-year linebacker from LSU. White has been a rangy player for the Buccaneers all season and that was no different in the Super Bowl. His interception put a dagger inside the Chiefs near the end of the game. He deserves that INT for the effort he’s shown all season
During the Super Bowl, White had 12 tackles with two of them going for a loss. He had one pass deflection and his interception that I mentioned earlier. This season has been a breakout one for White as he’s one of the best linebackers in the NFL, whether people admit it or not.
Buccaneers S Antoine Winfield Jr.
The Buccaneers drafted Winfield in the second round in the 2020 Draft, which was great. Most importantly, they brought in a talented player to fill a need. However, most people will know his father Antoine Winfield Sr, who once intercepted Tom Brady in 2001. With Tampa pairing Brady with the younger Winfield, it made many people who cover football feel old.
Wouldn’t you know but Winfield got the first turnover of the game, picking off Patrick Mahomes in the third quarter. With the Buccaneers leading 28-9 at this point of the game, things were looking bright for Tampa as they would go on to win. Without the play of Winfield, we could be talking about a different result.
Buccaneers DC Todd Bowles
If beating Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl doesn’t earn you another coaching opportunity, I don’t know what does. Todd Bowles called a perfect game defensively for the Buccaneers, limiting Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce for most of the game.
Likewise, the Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator Byron Leftwich also did a wonderful job calling plays and scheming the offense. Both men should have the attention of teams who are looking for potential head coaches. You’re not going to find many people who can shut down the Chiefs offense as we saw in the Super Bowl so don’t be shocked if someone tries to recruit Bowles to coach their team by this time next year.
