Kenya Rugby Sevens is Making 2021 the Year of Shujaa

November 23, 2021

Kenya is having a terrific 2021 season. They have been one of the most active teams this year, going back to Madrid in March. The “Shujaa” made appearances at the Tokyo 2020 and both Canada Sevens events. Certainly, getting this extra playing time is critical for the growing rugby sevens team.

“It’s been an important summer for us,” says head coach Innocent Simiyu after Edmonton. “Getting to play in front of our fans is special. We’re happy with the results over these last two weeks.”

Kenya is Starting to Get Results

Finding success on the sevens circuit is not easy for the Shujaa (a Swahili word meaning courage, confidence, bravery, or heroism). Their best World Series standings finish as a team was 5th in 2012-13. Their only series victory came at the 2016 Singapore Sevens, beating Fiji 30-7 in the finals. But in 2021, Kenya is showing why they are becoming a top sevens team.

Kenya’s performance at the 2020 Olympics left you wanting more. Their pool stage results were cruel, including losing one-possession games to the US and Ireland. After winning their final two games against Japan and Ireland, claiming ninth place, they showed improvement in the toughest pool. All while playing for their longtime team captain, Andrew Amonde, who retired after Tokyo 2020.

“They (Shujaa sevens) have been a pleasant surprise,” said one media member after Vancouver. “Glad to see them go as far as they did.”

What’s Next for Shujaa?

Heading into Dubai this weekend, Kenya is pushing for another podium finish. They’re going to be in Pool B with Argentina, USA, and Spain. Certainly, the Shujaa are going to have their work cut out for them. In addition, going back to the Canada Sevens events, Kenya is 3-1 in their last four games against the USA and Spain combined. Furthermore, their best finish in Dubai was making the semifinals in 2010.

To sum up, 2021 has been an impactful year for a lot of us. However, for Kenya, it’s been a positive year in terms of extra playing time. Between the Olympics, World Rugby Sevens Series, and invitational events, the Shujaa couldn’t have asked for more opportunities. So, as the world gets back to normal, let this be your warning of what’s to come from the rising Shujaa Sevens team.
